A protein shake is a nutritional supplement. You can consume shakes to help you achieve your fitness goals. But why is there a difference between low carb shakes and high carb shakes?
If you think about it carefully, a protein shake is really a kind of solution to a problem. When an individual works out at the gym, muscle tissue is being worn out. To encourage the muscle to grow, the individual must undertake a diet that is high in protein. Otherwise, the work out may even be detrimental to health (think catabolism).
Everyone knows that a protein shake helps to supplement a diet by allowing the individual to consume high quality protein. However, not everyone knows that shakes contain different amount of carbohydrates.
The primary goal for consuming carbohydrate is to replenish the energy that is lost during a workout. If you work out intensely 4 to 5 times a week, and you eat a high protein low carb diet, you are bound to experience a burn out sooner or later. That’s because the body is not very good at converting protein into energy. It is possible to do so, but immensely difficult. Protein is meant for building muscles. The body would much rather convert carbohydrates into energy.
So what’s the point of having a low carb protein shake?
You want a low carb shake if you already have other forms of carbohydrates like whole grains in your existing diet plan. You don’t want to consume excess carbohydrate because any excess can be converted into and stored as fat. A low carb shake enables you to supplement your current diet without increasing your carb intake drastically.
